University of Edinburgh PhD candidate Mariel Deluna is investigating teacher perspectives on the relationship between “race”, language, ethnicity, and nationality.

Current secondary school Modern Language teachers in Scotland

What is the study?

The goal of the study is to explore the connection between "race", ethnicity, and language in Scotland's modern language classrooms, discussing topics related to racialised, ethnic, and language identities; racial literacy, anti-racism; decolonisation; and race equality in education. The research will benefit participants by providing a space for reflection on race and language, and it also hopes to contribute to anti-racist professional development and teacher training courses in Scotland.

What will happen and how long will it take?

  • Completion of online consent and participant information request form (5 minutes)
  • Participation in online focus group session with critical literacy activities (1.5 hours)
  • Attendance at online individual interview (1 hour)

Who is running the study?

Mariel Deluna, PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh’s Moray House School of Education and Sport, volunteer with Bilingualism Matters Edinburgh, formerly a music teacher in California and an English language teacher in Japan.
