Too many languages? Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2023

Take one top academic, some dangerous ideas, add one comedian and it’s the force of nature that is the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas (CODI). Hosted by comedian Susan Morrison, and now in its eleventh year, CODI is sixty minutes of rapid-fire research from some of the finest minds in the country.

In this show our BM Director Professor Antonella Sorace debates if knowing only one language still possible in today’s world:

• Some people think that it would be good if the world spoke only one language – possibly English. Other people think that knowing more than one language is magic and lights up your brain. Professor Antonella Sorace (The University of Edinburgh) asks: could the truth be in the middle? Come and discover what is means to ‘know’ a language, whether four languages are better for the brain than two, and whether knowing only one language is still possible in today’s world.
